Dylan Jacobson
Busy Thursday

Greetings, my fair and welcome friends,

Today has been a long and tiresome day. Not just for me, but also for my fiancée. I have been training, endlessly, it seems, at the call center. It’s something I never expected, but I will do well. It will also be a good platform for me to use to begin building my career. For Carrie, my betrothed, she has been struggling with finals. Although it it a struggle, she is doing well, probably much better than she even thinks. She will be finished for the year soon, and I cannot wait to have my sane sweetheart back. Once question I have, are you in school and if so, how did your year end? If not, how do you start every summer?

Ever,

Dylan

Circumscribing

Finally, I present to you, my first example of circumscribing! The above is exactly what it looks like. Luckily for my friends at Reddit this is NOT circumcising. Anyhow, when gesture drawing, it is common to switch from the typical gesture which implies fluidity and motion, and apply circumscribing. Circumscription allows the user to get a more general grasp at the form, still holding a very gestural style, and then applying lines that wrap around the form. Form is everything with circumscribing. Circumscribing literally means that you are drawing a circle around something, and in this case, your something has a circular form. It allows the user to indicate the depth of a midsection, or limb, and oddly looks fantastic. I always find that my circumscribed sketches look far better than my gestures, especially when using conte chalk.

Moving along - and finally not saying “circumscribing” any longer - I want to take a moment to say once again that next Friday I will be launching something new and exciting that I will leak to Little Alice fans on Wednesday.

Ever,

Dylan

Back to Sketching

Greetings!

I’m so glad to be posting again. It has been a while, with the transition that I made going back home and having a different job. I no longer work for the city since I now have a real, full-time, job. I work in a call center, and it seems rather silly, but it isn’t the end. I am starting a small business next week that I will be more than exited to share next week. You’ll get a sneak peek right here next Wednesday.

Anyhow, I must start by apologizing for missing a page last Friday. I will mend that issue by bringing two pages a week back a week earlier than expected. Today I am showing off some of my sketches. These are the last of the gesture drawings that I will be showing for a while. Tomorrow you will see and get a good description of circumscribing, especially since a few of my friends over at Reddit mistook it for circumcision.

Ever,

Dylan

May Changes

Good afternoon,

Those of you checking in for your Wednesday edition of Little Alice will be unfortunately unhappy. Due to scheduling issues, especially school, I will be having to reschedule the upload times and dates for May. During the month of May, you will continue to see daily sketch submissions, as well as daily blogs, each weekday. The comic updates will be pushed to Fridays for May only. I will resume the Wednesday and Friday schedule in June when I have had more time to draw pages. Luckily, I will be scanning once a month from this point on unlike now when I have been scanning weekly. This system takes more time to prepare, but allows me to work a bit harder and polish the pages more. Please stay tuned, and know that I am sincerely sorry for the dates being changed. Thank you all for visiting.

Ever,

Dylan

Finals Week

Oh God, it’s finals week. Time has been rushing by, especially with Alice. Have a continuous project like a webcomic has seemed to move time along much quicker than usual. Each week, when available, I have uploaded two pages, as well with numerous blogs and sketches. These last few weeks have been so busy, though. Last week I only managed to upload some side work, but I managed to bring content. This week will be difficult in itself.

Yesterday, I failed to blog, but I had much going on. I was welcomed to one of my local lodges to participate in the raising of three new Masons. It was a stupendous honor to be able to participate and begin to learn the degree work myself. Some day I will have a more crucial role.

Today, I do not have a sketch, I will not have any sketches until next week. On Monday, I will begin with sharing circumscribing as an addition to the gesture drawings that I have done. Thanks for checking in, if you’re in school, how’s you semester going?

Ever,

Dylan

Deviation 2: Thanks

This is a page that is a “Thank you” to two groups. One: all of my friends, readers, and inspirations. You all keep me going. I have never had this sort of experience before, and although slow, I a have had a great time. This website is nearly a year old, and I am so very proud of it. Thank you for reading, and participating when you do.

One inspiration that I want to credit is Dean Yeagle. He is a stupendous artist that I have yet to discuss. This page is actually based in a particular Mandy sketch of his that I enjoy a lot. He’s a fantastic American artist and deserves even more mention than I can imagine to give him. Thank you Dean, for being a fantastic artist!

Second: The Dakota State University Production Center team. Located in the basement of Heston Hall at Dakota State, these ladies have been helping me for the entire school year. They work hard and have made countless scans and prints for me. They are definitely top notch, and will be my print shop of choice as long as they are available. Thank you, so very much, for all that you do!

I will return to the usual rotation next week.

Ever,

Dylan

Gestured Thank You

Today, I am applying gesture to a work that you will see tomorrow. This is a big “Thank You” page I am developing for the end of the school year. I will explain more about it tomorrow, hope you enjoy it. If you have any gestural work to show, link to it!

Deviation 1: Ode to Ernest Hemingway

This is a one-page special I made as a project for a Literature class. We had to cover one of the works, or authors that we have studied this semester. It’s simple, but a little macabre. Hemingway shot himself, and it is implied in this piece.

Sorry there isn’t a page of Alice this week. Classes are rapidly wrapping up, so I decided to stay on top of them and post what I am working on. Any thoughts?

Dylan

Gestures

Here are some more gesture drawings. As usual, I am focusing on female figures, especially with our heroine, Alice. This is one of the forms I like to start with. It’s always nice to start with loose gestures, as many as I can. These four were a smooth beginning, on Thursday you’ll see much more. It’s great to draw as many as you can, as fast as you can. Capture the motion, not the character. If you’ve got any sketches, show me! I’d love to share!

Next week we’ll start circumscribing.

Dylan

Figure Drawing

My sincerest apologies for missing a page on Friday. I feel terrible about it. I have had such a good streak, missing a day feels like a failure. I tried, and I struggled to get the page to come out the way I intended last week, but I couldn’t. On top of that I have been busy preparing to move out of school one last time. I will get things back up to date, and back on track.

In other news, I am changing the sketch subject. I am going to be working on figures. These three are very simple and start the next two weeks or more of sketching. After feeling that I have been experiencing some inability to translate thought into lines, I am going to go back and draw gestures and many other figure techniques. Stay tuned for more.

Ever,

Dylan
